This is something that I never will understand, so please someone help me. I feel like Jerry Seinfeld when I ask this
:
"What's the deal with Daylight Savings Time?"
I really cannot understand it and I need some of you educated Xangans to help me out. WHY do we need to do it? It's totally senseless to me. The only arguments I can think of having it is so that we can :
Pros for "Falling" back an hour:
- When we wake up early to go to work, it won't be so dark.
- We get an Extra Hour in our life.
.
* That's it?*
First of all, I personally could give 2 sh*ts whether it looks brighter in the morning. I'm still going to NOT want to go to work and having it "sunnier" will get me depressed even more!
Secondly, the extra hour sleep I get is not worth all the grief I have until we get to "spring forward". Lemme explain:
Cons for "Falling" back an hour:
- It gets darker sooner! That's it! Which means:
- I get depressed more quickly since everytime I leave work, its dark. Sad.
- There are certain things I only do during daytime. [Laundry, cleaning the house, etc] Especially since I do that on the weekends, I get up late and by the time I get motivated to do these things, it gets dark. [I don't expect you guys to feel bad for me on this one
]
- When it gets darker, it also gets colder...Brrr....
Here's how it looked outside my window today at 5:20 p.m......
- Now is that depressingly dark or what? -
.
But back to the question "What's the deal with Daylight Savings time?" Who really thought of this idea? And why did we all listen to him/her? I wonder what his/her arguments were for having it. All it really seems to do is confuse and nusiance people when they have to remember to swtich their clocks and to remind others to do so as well. All for what? An extra hour? Blasphemy! What a load of crock.
Apparently there is one state in the US that does not abide by these "rules". I think its Arizona. As a resident of New York, one of the most liberal places to live, I think we should protest against this. Or, I guess I could just suck it up and enjoy my hour.

I agree. Woop de doo, a whole freggin' hour ! Getting darker earlier....sucks !
I think it would improve the economy if it was darker later as more people would want to be out and about doing things while there is daylight ! We should petition to be in next November's ballot ! Yes on Prop. D to no more daylight savings !!! LMAO !
daylight savings: it was created for the kids. i agree - i'd rather not have it.
ryc:my friends and i think and talk about a lot of stuff...we keep each other busy. so much brain power towards that stuff, that i never know what to eat - always just order what everyone else is ordering.
Daylight savings time is just as it sounds - to save and maximise the available daylight during the summer months.
I think it was introduced in WWI in order to conserve energy in lighting business and homes - and has been kept around for mostly that same purpose.

doesnt everywhere in the world have daylight savings.. i'm not sure... but don't we... b/c when we go around the world for New Years we are always in sync... i think... i was also thinking about daylight savings... i think that's the only thing that this whole world acrees on... well maybe not everyone but we all do.
See this is also proof that time is only an invention by man. But does it also have to do with the rotation of the sun and blah blah... b/c i was also thinking... how would sundial... i think the spelling is wrong but yeah... maybe it has to do with that too... b/c how would those things work if we just changed it b/c we wanted to.... just my thoughts.. i didn't even read what other ppl said... but i will now...
*yawn* i dont know. all i know is its "11" when my body is used to it being 12am midnight. i guess just be glad you get to live the "nightlife" up sooner, hehe. wow those pics look just how new york does on TV!!! im such a FOB. sorry. =P
i think it has something to do with solar power. farmers think its important also...but i forget why.
From About.com:
Rule for determining date:
Daylight Saving Time begins on the first Sunday in April at 2 a.m. local time.
It returns to standard time on the last Sunday in October at 2 a.m. local time.
What Happens:
Clocks are turned an hour ahead in April and an hour back in October.
Sayings:
Spring Forward, Fall Back
Reason for Daylight Saving Time:

To make better use of daylight.

Conserve energy

Saves lives because people travel home in the light which is safer.

Can prevent crime because people do their errands in the daylight which is safer.

Contrary to popular belief, it was not created for farmers nor does it benefit farmers.
History:

First thought of by Benjamin Franklin in his 1784 essay, "An Economical Project".

On March 19, 1918, an Act to preserve daylight and provide standard time for the United States was enacted. Daylight Saving Time was set to begin on March 31, 1918 until the end of World War I.

It was repealed in 1919.

President Roosevelt instituted year-round Daylight Saving Time during World War II. He called it War Time and it lasted from 1942 to 1945.

Daylight Saving Time was not a law after 1945 and some locations still used it, which created difficulties for scheduling.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 was signed by President Lyndon Johnson. It had Daylight Saving Time begin on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October. States that wanted to be exempt had to pass a State law to do so.

During the energy crisis in the 1970's, President Nixon signed into law, the Daylight Saving Time Energy Act of 1973. This extended Daylight Saving Time to longer periods in an effort to save energy.

In 1986 it was amended to start Daylight Saving Time on the first Sunday in April and kept it ending on the last Sunday in October.
Places in the U.S. and it's Territories That Do Not Participate in Daylight Savings Time:

Most of the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana

The state of Arizona except for the Navajo Indian Reservation

American Samoa

Guam

Puerto Rico

Virgin Islands
*Achoo* party was way too packed! got sick.. and it got so dark so early today. saving an hour is not so great huh? but i would like it to be brighter in the morning. when i wake up and it's dark outside, i just want to go back to sleep. so.. i'm for daylight savings!

I absolutely HATE "spring forward." Err...think of it this way? When the sun goes down, that's when it's REALLY time to getcha partay on.
PS: I wish you were my counselor instead of the dirt bags I have now.
Thanks for making me feel better.
wow... that curryman knows his shit.... ahahahahahahha

You r CUTE!
i'm from the other side of the world here, i am in sydney. so whats the deal with day light saving time? hehee... well, from all ur pros and cons given, we are the opposite of it..we get less one hour and its brighter for us..
muahx...at least u got extra hour.
hahaa. another day of school man.
hawaii indiana arizona. when i was little and asked why there was daylight savings, my mom told me it was president reagan's idea.
I found this site might be useful http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/c.html
hehe daylight saving has actually just ended - which is why it is now lighter in the morning and darker at night. Here's the deal.
1. daylight saving is set so that we can make the most of the daylight hours. What good is it to be daylight at 4am in the morning in summer and darker at night? so they switch the clock to give that extra hour* at night time. *Now of course in summer the days are longer so really there is more than an hour of extra daylight each day.
2. In winter we really do need that hour in the morning so they give it back. I know the shorter days suck, but it is best we keep it for the morning. Don't want poor little kiddies on their way to school in the dark now do we?
i love falling back. i wish i could fall back a whole week and pay it back in the spring.
Hey there – how have you been?
Apologies for not commenting much lately, the London Film Festival has been keeping me busy – but im back and xangerising now – glad to see you’ve been keeping busy!
And with DST - they give us an hour, then they take it away 6 months later - bastards!
Catch you later!
i don't agree with the time change...though they say crime is lower and it conserves energy...that's always a bonus.
as you commented yesterday or the other day...*i'm sick at the moment so the days are smacked together*...yer right, i don't want him to be with me for the wrong reasons, but i don't want him to tease me either because it's emotional turmoil. anyhow, he responded and just wants to be friends. says he won't throw curve balls at me anymore and apologized. and yer right...men aren't THAT bad..they're just bad. =)
hope yer having a good week,
cherilyn
i agree with you. i'm against this daylight savings time. lol. man, i got class every day at 5:20pm, here at stony and when i get out of class it's mad dark. damn, and its scarier to walk through the shortcuts through dark tree paths at stony at that hour, i'm sure you remember. lol.
i'm subscribing 'cos it's easier to find you that way...
it had to do with farming
and people walk to school barefooted over hills both ways in 7ft of snow.....
i rather wake up and it's still dark [feeling that i woke up early]
then leave work dark, it's scary and feeling that i left work late
