  • One more day of school left!  Woo Hoo!  Can’t wait.   So about the end of April this year, one of my life long dreams was fulfilled.

I finally purchased an…ANT FARM!!  Man I was soo psyched.   For those who don’t know about ant farms, the ants don’t come in the package.  They arrive through the mail.  So I finally received them in the beginning of June.  They arrived…DEAD.  That’s right.  DEAD.  DEAD ON ARRIVAL.  DOA.  Whatever, you get the point.  Well, 2 were still alive out of 20!  At first I thought they were sleeping but....         (all the dead ants...)

So I ordered a new batch and I got them a few days ago.  About 18 survived the trip.  But they have now ruled my life.  In fact, I passed on my friend’s birthday party because I wanted to make sure I put my ants in their…Farm.   Here are some pics of
    their first day....

They first needed to be put in a fridge to calm them and then you place them in their farm (which includes putting in some sand and water).  And then you just watch them go.  They’re so fascinating!  Apparently there is an Undertaker Ant who takes all the dead ants and place them in a pile.  Which was true!  Then there are Slacker Ants who don’t work and just chill.  It takes a responsible ant to tap them on their head to get them to work…Fascinating.  Anyway, I ended up watching them for like 2 hours straight.
(1st time they entered the sandy terrain)
So...I just want to say that these little dudes are sooo smart.  They work together, build tunnels, store food, congregate, and are just really hard workers.  Check this pix out:
See the tunnels?  They did that all in one day!  See the upper half of the left hand side?  There was NO sand there orginally.  They carried all of it from the tunnels they made and carried it piece by piece to see if there was a way out...but to no avail.

If you look at the very top of the picture, in the center, that is where I open it up and give them water and food.  They have since tore the left side hill and are trying to gather and collect sand to even it out and escape through the center.  How smart!

    Ok.  I'm a loser.  I know.
