  • Happy Thanksgiving everybody.  Hope everyone ate well.  I know I am stuffed... and Thanksgiving was yesterday!

So as you some of you may know I moonlight as a High School/Middle School DJ for free mostly.

Whatever, it fulfills a dream of mine and I always like to go to a party and listen to all the music I like.  (even if its filled with 14-17 year olds!)

Anyway, even though I listen to a lot of music and different genres, most of these kids want the latest jams in Hip Hop.  That's right, so no LL Cool J, or Rob Base or Black Sheep or Tribe.  Not even Biggie or Tupac.  In fact, when I play some stuff from a couple of months ago, they get all huffy, which makes me not want to DJ a dance ever again.

Last month I did a HS dance and the week after I did one for the MS.  Both were to raise money for Katrina so I did it.  So the night of the Middle School Dance, of course I get requests and stuff.  But there was this one request that stood out.  This 6th grade little white girl, Frankie, who was the cutest thing you ever saw came up and timidly asked me:

Frankie: "Do you have any Rock?"
Me: "I'm sorry.  You need to speak louder!  What!?"
Frankie: "Do you have any Rock and Roll?"
    Me: "
     What kind of Rock?"

Now at this point, of course I had Rock but let's face it.  Once I take off Sean Paul and put in Kid Rock, besides the dirty looks I would get, everyone would get off the dance floor.  So I humored her.

Frankie: "I don't know.  Any kind of rock."
Me: "You gotta tell me what kind."
    Frankie: "Well....do you have any...Beatles?"

Beatles?  What does this girl know about the Beatles?  She was like born in the mid-90's!

Me: "I do, but if I play it do you think everyone behind you will dance to it?"

Frankie turns around and sees a huge crowd grinding to "Gasolina" by Daddy Yankee.

    Frankie: "I guess not. "
Me: "If it makes you feel any better...you have the best taste of music than anyone at this dance."
    Frankie: "THANKS! "

    OR

    How refreshing.

I ended up playing "Yesterday" for Frankie when the dance was over.  She was happy.
